And as a nationwide source of nursing jobs, we’re thrilled to join in to celebrate this ever-important specialty. Learn more about the importance of Medical-Surgical Nurses Week, plus five reasons to explore med/surg nursing jobs!

What is Medical-Surgical Nurses Week?

Designated by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN), Med/Surg Nurses Week was created to point out the many ways that nurses working medical-surgical roles make a difference in hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country. The goal is to create awareness of this important nursing specialty, as well as to inspire other nurses to take up the job at a time when demand is high.

According to the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB), that means emphasizing how med/surg nurses can nurture and mentor one another, as well as help serve their communities through care and education. Medical-Surgical Nurses Week is also a time to promote medical-surgical nursing certification, to bring more nurses into the specialty and to work toward “better and safer health care.”

How to Celebrate Medical-Surgical Nurses Week

If you’re looking to get into the Med/Surg Week spirit, there’s still time to celebrate! You can find a great lineup of branded posters, notebooks, ribbons and more at the AMSN’s Med/Surg Week page.

And for information on getting certified (or recertified), exam prep, grants, volunteer opportunities and everything else you need to know about the med/surg nursing profession, visit the MSNCB website.

5 Good Reasons to Work Med/Surg Nursing Jobs

#1: Make a Difference in Patients Who Need You

Because medical-surgical nurses are so intimately involved in providing direct patient care — including those who are critically ill or recovering from surgery — nurses who are driven by caring for people on a person-to-person may find it particularly rewarding. “Medical-surgical nurses focus every day on caring compassionately for patients and families,” as the MSNCB puts it.

#2: Med/Surg Nursing Jobs = A Variety of Nursing Roles

Med/surg nursing jobs are some of the most versatile careers in healthcare. And, while that can be challenging, it can also be incredibly rewarding. In this job you’ll see, and help treat, a huge variety of different conditions and injuries, with patients of all types. If you love variety and hate being bored — and like to learn as much as possible — then medical-surgical nursing could be the perfect fit for you.

#3: Explore New Nursing Specialties

The variety of a med/surg nursing job makes it a great choice for nurses looking to find the right specialty, or who want a way to ease into a different one. Because additional certification beyond licensure is not required for most med/surg nursing jobs — although it wouldn’t hurt to get a RN-BC, ABSNC or CMSRN — they offer a great opportunity for new nurses to find the niche that appeals to them.

#4: Develop Career-Defining Skills

There are many reasons why med/surg nursing professionals are so highly valued by healthcare employers. With the responsibility of coordinating patient care during critical moments, these nurses handle many important tasks at once — like patient prep, test ordering, managing records and communicating effectively with doctors and other clinicians — all while staying calm and organized.

These are valuable skills for any RN, and it also happens to be the type of experience that healthcare employers love. So, those who put in time as a med/surg nurse at some point in their careers are likely to have a better pick of jobs later on down the road — and at a higher price, too!

#5: Great Job Opportunities Across the U.S.A.
