Happy Medical-Surgical Nurses Week 2022 from CareerStaff! Held every year from November 1-7, Med/Surg Nurses Week honors and recognizes the many professionals working hard in essential med/surg nursing jobs across the United States.
Designated by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN), Med/Surg Nurses Week was created to point out the many ways that nurses working in medical-surgery roles make a difference in hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country. The goal is to create awareness of this important nursing specialty, as well as to inspire other nurses to take up the job at a time when demand is very high.
According to the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB), that means emphasizing how med/surg nurses can nurture and mentor one another, as well as help serve their communities through care and education. Medical-Surgical Nurses Week is also a time to promote medical-surgical nursing certification, to bring more nurses into the specialty and to work toward “better and safer health care.”

5 Good Reasons to Work Med/Surg Nursing Jobs
#1: A chance to make a real difference to patients who need you.
Because medical-surgical nurses are so intimately involved in providing direct patient care — including those who are critically ill or recovering from surgery — nurses who are driven by caring for people on a person-to-person may find it particularly rewarding. “Medical-surgical nurses focus every day on caring compassionately for patients and families,” as the MSNCB puts it.
#2: An opportunity to experience a variety of nursing roles.
Med/surg nursing jobs are some of the most versatile careers in healthcare. And, while that can be challenging, it can also be incredibly rewarding. In this job you’ll see, and help treat, a huge variety of different conditions and injuries, with patients of all types. If you love variety and hate being bored — and like to learn as much as possible — then medical-surgical nursing could be the perfect fit for you.
#3: A way to explore new nursing specialties.
The variety of a med/surg nursing job makes it a great choice for nurses looking to find the right specialty, or who want a way to ease into a different one. Because additional certification beyond licensure is not required for most med/surg nursing jobs — although it wouldn’t hurt to get a RN-BC, ABSNC or CMSRN — they offer a great opportunity for new RNs to find the niche that appeals to them.
#4: A means to develop career-defining skills.
There are many reasons why med/surg nursing professionals are so highly valued by healthcare employers. With the responsibility of coordinating patient care during critical moments, these nurses handle many important tasks at once — like patient prep, test ordering, managing records and communicating effectively with doctors and other clinicians — all while staying calm and organized.
These are valuable skills for any RN, and it also happens to be the type of experience that healthcare employers love. So, those who put in time as a med/surg nurse at some point in their careers are likely to have a better pick of jobs later on down the road — and at a higher price, too!
